Negative staining is a rapid method for contrasting a thin specimen with heavy metals. In this method the background is stained, leaving the actual specimen unstained. It is a suitable method for visualization of macromolecules such as protein complexes, viruses, organelles, liposomes, exosomes and bacteria.
